Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the right to contest specific decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
