The Top Record of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Claims the Number One Position.

On the surface, this work may look more like a difficult academic quiz rather than a new popular music project from an artist whose last single featured a global pop icon. Split into four separate sections and voiced in thirteen languages, we have a dizzying symphonic work that delves into feminine mystique, spiritual ascent, and corporal change, frequently via the perspective of different women saints. The dissolution of a relationship—a theme treated with raw openness elsewhere—is launched heavenward on this record, supported by the constant presence of a major orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning composer within an extensive list of collaborators. Its sheer audacity alone renders the work of contemporary pop stars seem quite laughable.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to avoid overly intellectual chin-stroking is almost a miracle, and sole credit going to Rosalía. While this is not the first time album to alchemize the past with the present, the ambitions are far greater here, and the balancing act far more precarious. What truly raises this fourth release, outside of its multilayered melodies, dense arrangements, and engrained theatricality, proves to be a core spirit of fun. Similar to the legendary artist at her peak, there is a captivating quality to Rosalía's singing which sweeps the listener into its tornado. Even when she's tearing your heart in two, you still desire to be alongside her through the journey.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

That playful spirit shines brightly during a stunning piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool over several minutes. Then, everything falls away, to reveal we hear a spontaneous laugh followed by a declaration prior to a comically over-the-top orchestral surge thuds down with cartoonish force. The track immediately shifts to the wild single featuring galloping orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a surprise appearance from the artist Björk.

"The charm of this album lies in you never quite understand—nor wish to know—what it is going to next."

Almost every track ends at a completely different place than how it began. One moment examines the fleeting trappings of celebrity with a featherlight orchestration before collapsing into digital cacophony. Another, a cut echoing her earlier trap-infused style starts out moody and sinister, featuring menacing beats, until sudden traditional handclaps and a heavenly chorus arrive to soften its rough edges.

The Bridge Of Experiment and Pop

A key achievement on Lux is navigating the line between radical experimentation and broad appeal. It is no coincidence that it has become her highest-charting release to break into the upper reaches of key markets: its heart contains a collection of utterly undeniable hits. One track sung entirely in English builds on a chorus that feels to gather increasingly infectious melodies while it spins skyward. This feat is repeated by another expansive track that grows and contracts, weaving layered melodies like a complex tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number charms with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic hook.
  • In its words, it aligns with cultural honesty of other breakup songs, lambasting a former lover labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across these tracks, the singing carry a sharp smile, like a storybook character concealing a blade: "Gold medal in acting like a motherfucker / You have the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

This album represents popular music on a grand level, an ambitious reach for high Art amid of looming artificial blankness. It rejects solipsism for sublime transcendence, crafting a dramatic spectacle that skillfully controls its own built-in excess. This is an abundant source of hidden treasure that requires patience to completely explore but doesn't seem like hard work. Where other major releases of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, this record is a lavish banquet at which the guests at the table, some tipsy on holy drink, flit from conversations about ancient saints, the profound sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and shared gossip about useless men. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from music's most endlessly creative practitioner.
