Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
